USING HOPS
Most kit beers on the market today take care of the bittering part of things pretty well. Adding additional hops to our cans (finishing hops) is to provide extra flavour & aroma.
Boiling our hops brings out the bitterness. Steeping, simmering or dry hopping brings out the pleasant hop flavour & aroma.
THREE POPULAR METHODS
1.DRY HOPPING
Dry hopping is adding the hops directly to the fermenter. Place hops in the STAINLESS STEEL HOP BALL, & add to the brew at some stage during fermentation, usually when adding yeast.
2.STUBBY METHOD
Put hops in a stubby bottle & ¾ fill the bottle with boiling water. Cap & leave while making your brew like normal. Tip the bottle unstrained into the brew before adding the yeast.
3.QUICK BOIL METHOD
This method is best used when using additional malt in your recipe.
EG: 500g malt powder to 2 litres water & bring to gentle boil. Split hops into two equal piles, add one pile to the mixture for about 10 minutes. Then add the second pile, stir, cover & remove from heat. Leave for 5-10 minutes then add to brew in your fermenter.
USING GRAINS, LEMON GRASS, OAK SHAVINGS
Any grains used in the recipe should be put in a bag, covered & boiled for about 15 minutes, turn heat off & leave, covered, for a further 15 minutes. Remove bag, wring it out & use liquid as a starting mix in your brew.
